Turf wisdom had its inniug at Sheffield yes-
terday, five favorites winning, while Scamp
who captured the hurdle race, was backed
down fr(»m 7 to 5 to 1. The weather was perfect,
the track fast and the attendance large. The
race track seemed to have more attraction for
some of the visiting politicians than the con-
vention, and Tammany badges and others were
conspicuous.

The principal event was a mile condition race
in which Rudolph, Urania, Saint Lee and others
were entered. There was a hot tip out on Saint
Lee, and opening at 4 to 1 he was quickly
backed down to 8 to 5. C. Slaughter had the
mount, having come from St. Louis to ride him.
Audrax and Urania caused some delay at the
post, but the rubber snapped to a good start
for all except Audrax. Urania made the run-
ning followed by Fred K, Slaughter lying back
in third place. There was no change till after
the sixteenth pole, when Slaughter brought up
the favorite, and in a driving finish beat Urania
by half a length, with Fred K third the same
distance back. Rudolph was never formidable.

In the opening race Loudon the favorite who
^Jloke last with a running start managed to
beat (jfunwaa by half a length.

Solo was an odds on favorite in the two-year-
old race. Off fourth he went to the front at
once, winning from Tom Anderson who beat
Fonclif a head for the place.

In the seven furlong event Miss Young was
always first choice with Simmons next in de-
mand. The favorite and Glenoid were the con
tenders to the stretch where the old horse was
beaten and Dick Behan came up. He could not
catch Miss Young who won by a length, with
Freddie L T a fair third.

Though it was Ashland’s first essay over the
jumps he was made favorite in the jumping
race. Settle Up as usual behaved badly at the
post. Ashland led over the first hurdle where
Gratz Hanly fell. Shoemaker jumped it high
enough to clear a house only to make a mistake
at the second obstacle. Scamp then went to
the front and won easily.

Jennie June the favorite won the last race
easily from Barguard. F. Starkweather the
owner of the second horse ran the winner up to
$700, $400 over her entered price, and she was
bought in for $705,

NOTES OF THE TURF,

Turf, Field and Farm declares that Henry of
Navarre has thrown out a splint and has been
placed in the hands of a veterinarian for treat-
ment.

Charles Boots, of the Elmwood, Cal., farm, has
sold, to go to the city of Mexico for racing.
Duchess of Milpitas, b. f, 4, by Duke of Norfolk
— Ledette, by Nathan Coombs, price $1,000,

The Louisville Courier- Journal knows good
racing matter when it comes to hand, ready and
on time. This idea comes out of the display of
part of Daily Racing Form’s advance critic-
ism of the Realization Stakes in the Courier-
Journal of Monday.

€ M Corrigan's Indio, who w’on at Latonia yes-
lay, was one of the highest priced young-
sters of last winter’s Haggin sale at San Fran-
cisco. He cost Mr. Corrigan some $4,000. His
owner was in town yesterday, returning to La-
tonia last night. He sent a bet of $250 to Shef-
field on the colt.

FIVE CHEAP LEATHER FORMS.

Five ‘‘Leather Forms” were ordered and not
taken. The five $6 books, with copies of Daily
Racing Form from June 2d to date, for sale at
$5 each.

Milwaukee, Wis., July S. — Jim Murphy’s
Buck Massie and the good ‘2-year-old George
Rose have arrived and will race here. Souffle
will be returned here after her Cincinnati
race. Old Stanley King send his entire
string here to-morrow as does Al Orth. It is
excellent racing and weather. The crowd to-
day was good. They grow daily. Everybody is
more than satisfied with the racing.

RACING GOSSIP.

W. C. Vreeland, a veteran reporter of the east-
ern turf, tells the following story from observa-
tion of the Kingston Futurity course record of
1 :08, still on the books :

“Starter Caldwell made a mistake as to the
distance of the race and sent the horses away
from the fiv and a half furlong post instead of
the regular ‘futurity’ mark. Track superinten-
dent, Frank (ffark, who was one of the timers,
noticed the mistake and tried to remedy it, but
was unable to do so, the horses being dispatched
too promptly. The record caused a good deal of
comment. Those who knew held their peace, as
it was thought that no good would result from
having the race run over again. The track cop-

ditions were all against fast time, the track
being slow if not heavy, from a previous rain.
There are any number of men in the East famil-
iar with this little in ide history of Kingston’s
futurity record, and when they speak about the
best performances over that course they always
give the credit to that grand filly, La Tosca, who
carried over 120 pounds and defeated Nellie Bly
in a very fast race. ”

About August 10 Daily Racing Form Publish-
ing Co. will issue a book that will give the
racing public more information than it ever had
before. The volume will be of pocket size and
built for long and hard use on linen paper and
within flexible leather covers. It will be copy-
righted as a book and patented as an appliance
to racing. Daily Racing Form Manual will
contain a handicapper’s table, such as is usually
foisted on this and that “lamb” at $50 and $100.
We cannot supply a mental key of application.
Nature is the only doctor in such special cases
and it is busy in other lines just now. The
handicapping table is one of weight
applied to distance and time, in general use.
To it will be attached a track- speed series of
compilations — our own. It is the result of a
year’s work on average speed, at all distances
and all American tracks at their best. Other
conditions are not within mathematics, because
the complexion of less than perfect going is not

figurable. The Manual will also give the track
records of all the American courses, book mak-
ing percentages and an experience tale by the
editor of Daily Racing Form on “how not
to lose on the race track.” This tale will be a
personal one of loss and gain and the avenues
j through which both came. The Manual will
not have a large edition. Its price will be far
below its value. Only advance orders will be filled
—as they come. The book will cost $5 and can be
dlivered August 12 at the latest. All its com-
pilations will be intelligent, simple and up to
date-. Some dozen subscribers to Leather Form
did not call ^or the books they ordered— and did
not pay for in advance. Orders for the Manual
must be accompanied by the price. The book
is not for sale by newsdealers, outside Hawley
of Cincinnati, Jett of St. Louis, E. C. Weatherly
our San Francisco agent, Halle of New Orleans
and Hearing of Louisville.

better racing luck. He was moving up rapidly when he was badly cut otf. Brodhead again
showed his yellow stioak. The ride on Rachel McAllister was wretched. Ovation ran an excel-
lent race. Effie T gave it up in the stretch. She is of little account.

race was a good one. Ho has speed and a big heart. Fonclif was heavily played and ran a great-
ly improved race. Paine is not “much” these days. Hums was a trifle green, but had speed. He
will be heard from later on. Solo was by far the class of it.

Miss Young back on far turn and generally rode her with good judgment. Dick Behan had no
early speed but finished very strong. Glenoid was running under a double wrap at three furlong
